Native American Traditional Foods

Native Americans have many traditional foods. On this website you will be reading about some of the most popular Native American dishes, snacks, or drinks they like to eat or drink at any time, not only holidays. Some of them are corn pone, Indian pudding, baked pumpkins, Mickey Mouse pancakes, and corn soup.

Here is the recipe for Indian pudding:

Ingredients:

2 cups raisins or apricots or other dried fruit
2 cups cornmeal
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts)
4 cups water
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
1/4 cup grated apple

Preparation:

Mix the raisins and nuts with the cornmeal. Boil the water and stir in the cornmeal blend until it starts to thicken, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in the other ingredients and spread in a 2 1/2 quart casserole or baking dish, buttered lightly. Place the pan inside of another larger pan filled with 1 inch of water (a water bath) and bake at 350 degrees F for close to 2 hours or until set and golden brown. Let cool and serve as is or with whipped cream or berries.
