Lavan is considered to be the most important
part of the wedding ceremony and literally means to "break away," referring
to the breaking away of the bride from her parents. The Lavan is the rite that unites the soul. Marriage
is a sacred bond in attaining worldly and spiritual joy.
There are four verses of Lavan, each
of which explains the four stages of love and married life:
1. Performance of duty to the family and the community
2. Desire and love and yearning
3. Stage of
detachment known as virag
4. Harmony and union in married life during which human
love blends into love for God
