This reading is basically about how a child (Samuel) as well as his
mother and father are taken away by a group of white men and force to
obey their commands. They were badly treated, as animals basically,
and they were cold, fearful and hungry. They along with other families
were kept captive for several months, abandoning all of their property,
possessions, unaware of what is going to happen next.
One day, Samuel’s father perishes leaving him with doubts and confusion
about his death. Samuel feels cold and nostalgic for the old days in
which he was warm and shared memories with his late father.
Shortly after, the people held captive are told to walk for numerous
amounts of days; burying the ones that die along the way in shallow
graves. All seems quiet, no words are interchanged between people, they
were stared at by the people of the white town. Samuel feels feelings
of misery, sadness and feels uncomfortable being watched by people who
are responsible for his suffering along with everybody else’s. The group
arrives at a big river giving discontent to the soldiers, so they camp
out ; as a result more lives are claimed due to the icy conditions.
Unfortunately, Samuel’s mother had a temperature and a severe cough
one night; resulting in her cold death the morning after. Samuel felt
abandoned, desperate as he tried to wake his mom up from that awful
eternal sleep. He yelled her name continuously, making his aunt and
uncle rush over to him; his aunt wailed in pain when she realized the
reality of her sister’s death. Samuel realizes how lonely he is, knows
he is accompanied by the rest of the group but will lack forever his
mother’s warmth, her gentle breath, her soft fingers through his hair.
He feels impotent by not being able to do anything about anything.
His mother is buried in a shallow grave in the road, he cannot help
but to look back as this places fades in the distance. Samuel starts
to feel hate towards those white soldiers who caused so much misery
and pain, hates them for being responsible for the deaths of his parents,
for the tremendous amounts of walking in terrible conditions. Nothing
but hate is felt by Samuel, how discriminated he feels as he was never
taken care of due to the color of his skin and his clan.
